چکیده

New empirical calibrations for the fractionation of oxygen isotopes among zircon, almandine-rich garnet, titanite, and quartz are combined with experimental values for quartz-grossular. The resulting A-coefficients (‰K) are: for the relation 1000 ln Y-X AY-X (10 /T). The fractionation of oxygen isotopes between zircon and coexisting minerals can provide otherwise unavailable evidence of magmatic processes, including crystallization, remelting, and assimilation-fractional crystallization. Experimental calibration of oxygen isotope fractionation between quartz and zircon

We report the results of an experimental calibration of oxygen isotope fractionation between quartz and zircon. Data were collected from 700 to 1000 C, 10–20 kbar, and in some experiments the oxygen fugacity was buffered at the fayalite–magnetite–quartz equilibrium. Oxygen isotope fractionation shows no clear dependence on oxygen fugacity or pressure. Unexpectedly, some high-temperature data (9...

High-precision oxygen isotope analysis of picogram samples reveals 2 μm gradients and slow diffusion in zircon

Ion microprobe analysis with a sub-micrometer diameter spot reveals a sharp, 2 μm gradient in oxygen isotope ratio proving that oxygen diffusion in zircon is slow even under prolonged high-grade metamorphism. The data are consistent with an oxygen diffusion coefÞ cient of 10–23.5±1 cm2/s. Furthermore, this gradient is found in a zircon that contains clear textural evidence of recrystallization ...

Constraints on Hadean zircon protoliths from oxygen isotopes, Ti-thermometry, and rare earth elements

[1] We report zircon oxygen isotope ratios and reconnaissance Ti-in-zircon concentrations, guided by cathodoluminescence image studies, for detrital zircons up to 4.34 Ga from the Narryer Gneiss Complex of Western Australia. Zircon oxygen isotope results bolster the view that some Hadean (>3.85 Ga) zircon source melts were enriched in heavy oxygen, a sensitive proxy for melt contamination by se...

Slow oxygen diffusion rates in igneous zircons from metamorphic rocks

Empirical tests of oxygen exchange rate in zircon crystals from amphiboliteand granulite-facies metamorphic rocks of the Grenville Province demonstrate preservation of igneous dO through protracted igneous and metamorphic histories, forming the basis of quantitative estimates of diffusion rate. Granitic orthogneisses, which cooled slowly after granulite-facies metamorphism, show no consistent r...

Correlated dO and [Ti] in lunar zircons: a terrestrial perspective for magma temperatures and water content on the Moon

Zircon grains were separated from lunar regolith and rocks returned from four Apollo landing sites, and analyzed in situ by secondary ion mass spectrometry. Many regolith zircons preserve magmatic dO and trace element compositions and, although out of petrologic context, represent a relatively unexplored resource for study of the Moon and possibly other bodies in the solar system. The combinati...
